As the world prepares for the 2019 UN Climate Change Conference, TakingITGlobal, the Centre for Global Education, CC-UNESCO, Ocean Wise, Polar Bears International, and a number of strategically chosen partner organizations, are laying the groundwork for a collaborative youth mobilization that will engage over 100,000 youth, from every continent on earth, in the world’s largest synthesis of youth education and action.

About the Project

Centre for Global Education and TakingITGlobal are excited to announce #Decarbonize: #Decolonize - Water Dialogue. We have partnered with several branches of UNESCO, including the Intergovernmental Hydrology Programme, Ecohydrology, the UNESCO Biosphere Reserves, the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, the UNESCO Associated Schools Network (ASPnet) to help deliver a comprehensive learning journey around water, biospheres, and ocean biodiversity. We are so excited to see the youth-led action and awareness projects that will come out of this new focus!

In this project, youth will spend four months engaging in online, collaborative learning on a dedicated virtual classroom and exchanging ideas during a series of interactive videoconferences, exploring the local, regional, national, and global intersections of climate change and oceans and waterways. Students will also be challenged to engage this topic through a lens of #Decolonization - education, community, and action - recognizing that many systemic injustices are rooted and perpetuated in colonial frameworks that maintain a power imbalance between the Global North and Global South.

This project culminates in a youth representative from each of the 30 participating nations engaging in a ten-day synthesis process in Santiago, Chile. Ahead of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change conference (COP 25), these national lead youth will collate and condense thousands of hours of work on the youth action projects, art, and collaborative learning into a global youth white paper, which will be presented to the leaders of the world at COP 25, and highlighted as part of the UNESCO flagship program.
